Tips for Relocating as a Single Parent

Relocating as a Single Parent

When relocating as a single parent is it vital to plan well in advance. Having a detailed plan in place will not only help you, but also the children feel more secure and confident in the move. Giving yourself at least 2 to 3 months to prepare for the move should be plenty amount of time to get everything completed. Consider creating and keeping a planner or checklist of everything that needs to be completed. Anything that needs to be completed, write it down, and plan out a day to compete each task. More difficult tasks, consider completing while children are at school, day care, or getting a sitter to help keep children occupied and out of the way.

The most important thing to remember in the months leading up to the move is to have a positive attitude for the kids. Whether you are moving because of a death, divorce, financial issues, or other situations, it is going to be difficult for both you and your children. Do your best to not let your kids if you are worried or having doubts about the move. This will only increase and intensify any negative feeling they may already have. The better attitude you have, the better attitude they will have as well.

Commination with your children is essential. Sit down with your kids and allow them to speak openly about their feeling towards the move and any other issues they may be having as a result of this change in there life. The older the children are the harder it may be for them to accept this change as they have already built relationships and connections to the area they are in. Younger children tend to be more resilient to change and welcome new situations.

If you have not yet decided on a location be sure to do your research. The internet is full of information regarding safe neighborhoods and schools, as well as crime rates in different areas. There are so many websites and social media pages that hold vital information that can make a big difference in your decision making. This is a great way to start making new connections in an area of interest as well. Concede the app Meetup to find of people with similar interests or general life similarities.

Having connections made ahead of time can make moving more comfortable. A great way to get to know parents at your children’s school it to volunteer to join the PTA. Allowing open communication with your coworkers can also be a great way to learn about the community and build connections of your own.

Most importantly, take time for yourself and give yourself a break as you go. Not everything needs to be complete all at once. Often, allowing for breaks will make your more productive. You will feel less overwhelmed and be more willing to complete tasks.
